Halloran Springs. This spring was covered with wood planks supported by wood beams, and then covered with dirt--- this was to slow evaporation. The white deposit around the spring is (I believe) travertine, which is common in springs that are fed from deep limestone aquifers. |

This looks like a lava seam, but there is no cinder cone. One author of a book I read postulated that it was formed by a comet, but I do not agree. It is a meter thick, and runs above ground for about 16 meters. |

My transport, in a sandy wash within the Mojave Desert. This is a Toyota one wheel drive pickup, six cylinders, so it is a minor miracle I haven't been stuck in sand pits more than I have. I carry a great deal of fresh water, a shovel, bedding, warm clothing, and a large pile of other gear. Some times the bedding is used for traction on the road. |
